Entry

The competition will consist of three (3) independent categories:

  1. Best Chili
  2. Best Homebrew
  3. Best Chili+Homebrew Pairing

This is a team competition.  A single competitor may act as both brewer and chef, but they must purchase both tickets (no cost). Solo entries are allowed, but will not be eligible to compete in all three (3) categories.  Folks who do not have a partner can reach out to baltibrew@gmail.com, and we will help you find a corresponding homebrewer or chili chef to work with!  All entrants must be at least 21 years old. No outside commercial alcoholic beverages are permitted.

Each competitor on a team must purchase one of the nonrefundable Competitor Ticket options per category (no cost) directly from Baltibrew’s Ticketspice website. Upon arrival with your brew and/or chili contest submissions, each team member will receive a custom glass.

To enter, complete the online entry form and secure tickets for your team as soon as possible. There is no entry deadline, but online registration will be limited to 20 teams.

Please note that only (1) person is eligible for entry per one (1) competitor ticket purchase, for a maximum of two (2) persons per team.  If additional people are coming with you, they must either be independently registered as competitors and bring their own submissions, or they must purchase attendee tickets.

Submissions

Quantity: Competitors should supply roughly 5 gallons of brew and/or 3 gallons of chili. Larger quantities are definitely recommended though (see Judging section below; e.g. historically we’ve found that the Homebrew winners generally brought 5 gallons or more).

Styles: All styles are welcome; “ChiliBrew” does not mean we’re telling you to bring chili-pepper-beer! There are no style requirements or guidelines except that everything must be homemade (not prepackaged) and safe for consumption in moderation.

Homebrew Containers: no commercial product labels (neither attached to the container, nor screen-printed as with Rogue/Stone/Corona) are permitted, but labels made by entrants and/or containers with embossed markings (such as Samuel Adams’) are acceptable. Any size or type of brew container is OK: bottle/growler/keg/etc., so long as you bring everything everything needed to serve attendees and judges.

Chili: This is an open category. Submissions may be either Vegetarian Chili or Chili con Carne and will be judged as one category. We encourage both Vegetarian Chili and Chili con Carne entrants to be able to answer questions concerning ingredients for tasters who may observe restricted diets. Clear, legible signage at the serving table to indicate the type of chili is required.

Delivery: Competitors must arrive on-site with their submission by 1 PM, which is one hour before general admission.  We urge competitors to use the rear parking lot accessible via Gay St.  All competitors must check in at the Competitor Check-In table, located between the rear parking lot and Zion’s north side.

Setup & Presentation: Ice will be provided for each Homebrew submission to keep their beverage cold during the event. For each chili submission, we will provide a chafing dish and Sterno pots to present, serve, and keep chili warm during the event. Sampling glasses, cups, spoons, napkins, tables and chairs for all submissions will also be provided. If there is anything you would like to be made available for judges to enjoy while tasting your submissions (e.g. bread, cheese), you are welcome to personally supply it.  Fermented condiments (homemade cheese, hot sauce, kimchi, etc.) are encouraged but not required – they will be eligible for a bonus cash prize, as well!

Leftovers: If you brought it, take it home. Otherwise, the event organizers and volunteers will dispose of all leftovers and stray materials at the end of the event.

Judging

This event is not officially sanctioned by any competitive organization.

There will be TWO types of judges:

(1) Attendees: every ticketed attendee is eligible to judge the “People’s Charmingest” awards, and may cast their votes using color-coded tokens to choose their favorite submission in each category: Best Chili, Best Homebrew, and Best Pairing.

(2) Judges’ Panel: a panel of three (3) local judges will rank their top three favorite competitors in each category from the submissions they taste, and collaborate their individual rankings to determine the final ranking for the “Judges’ Choice” awards.

Each homebrew serving dispensed to a judge or attendee is not to exceed 4 fluid ounces. Recommended chili sample size is 2 fluid ounces. Judges are not obligated to taste every submission for each category. It is recommended that competitors reserve 8 samples for the Judges’ Panel to taste; event staff will visit your table to collect these and deliver them to the panel. Only the Judges’ Panel may be served homebrew submissions by event staff.

Judging will be hedonistic-style: judges may use any criteria they wish to evaluate competitors (flavor, refinement, appearance, creativity, intangibles, etc).

At the end of the event, the Judges’ Panel will submit their final ranked list for the “Judges’ Choice” awards in each category, and all votes from attendees will be tallied. In each category, the competitors with the most attendee votes will win the corresponding “People’s Charmingest” award. All competitors and their submissions in the top three (3) of each category will be announced aloud; only the winner of each category will be awarded a cash prize.

Judges can’t taste what’s already gone!  Ration your portions wisely!

Prizes

Cash prizes in the amount of $75 will be awarded to the winner of each “Best Chili” and “Best Homebrew” category.  “Best Pairing” winners will be awarded $100 in cash for their efforts!  As an added bonus, “Best Fermented Condiment” will be decided by the Judges’ Panel for a prize of $50. Winners must be present at the event to claim their cash prizes unless they make arrangements with event staff for a proxy to receive the prize in their place for later delivery. Unclaimed prizes without a proxy recipient will be allocated to the next-highest finishers in the competition.
